Protecting, regulating and receiving sensory messages are the three main functions of the skin. The skin is a regulating organ and consists of the epidermis and the dermis. Beneath the dermis, the hypodermis, or fatty tissue, is stored. The skin plays a vital role in health and well-being of humans.
The Essential Functions performed by the Skin:
Protection: The skin protects the body from a number of things. The skin acts as a barrier against harmful things from the world outside. It protects against the sun, dehydration, bacteria, injury and much more.
Regulating Body Temperature: The skin helps to cool the body down through sweat glands, releasing sweat onto the outer skin. When the sweat evaporates, reduces the heat levels of the body, cooling it down effectively when it is hot.
Sensation: The skin is covered with sensory receptors that relay signals to the brain. It allows us to recognize and feel sensations such as, touch, pain, cold, heat and much more.
Immunity: The cells within the skin help the body with immunity. It acts as a barrier against harmful substances and bacteria, germs.
Excretion: Unwanted by-products of the human body are released through the skin, via sweat glands. The skin can also expel ammonia, urea, uric acid, and excess water.
Permit Growth and Movement: The skin allows growth of the body and will adapt to an individual’s movement. Because of its recoil and elastic properties, it can adapt to movement and growth.
The Provision of Vitamin D: Exposing the skin to sunlight, ultraviolet light, the skin produces Vitamin D. A chemical found in the skin reacts with ultraviolet light. Overexposure, however, can be harmful and even dangerous.
The skin is able to absorb substances, such as oxygen, necessary for bodily functions. The skin also acts as a barrier, keeping essentials inside and protecting it from harmful things on the outside.
